What Is the Science of Reading?

For many years, many children were not learning to read successfully. Researchers studied how the brain learns to read and discovered strategies that work better for all children.

Today, families and schools across the United States use the Science of Reading because it helps children read with confidence and understanding, no matter the language spoken at home or their reading level.

At La Fuerza de Familias Latinas, we understand the challenges families face. Our workshops and videos have supported thousands of homes, schools, and community organizations across the country.

What Are the Foundations of the Science of Reading?

The foundations, or pillars, of the Science of Reading are the essential skills children need to learn to read successfully:

  • Listening to and playing with sounds (phonological awareness)
  • Connecting letters and sounds (phonics)
  • Reading with rhythm and accuracy (fluency)
  • Learning new words (vocabulary)
  • Understanding what they read (comprehension)

Why We Created a Video Series to Support Reading at Home

This five-video series was created to guide families through each step of the Science of Reading workshops. Each video explains, with real examples and simple language, one of the key pillars children need to learn to read: creating a safe space, playing with sounds, building vocabulary, reading with fluency, and supporting our children at school and in the community.

Families across the country are watching this video series to understand, in our language, how children learn to read in English.

In the video series, you will learn:

  • The skills your child needs to learn to read in English.
  • Simple ways to support learning at home, no matter your reading level or the language you speak.
  • Explore the episodes below and share this experience with your community.

The Science of Reading

Ep. 1: A Safe Space

Reading starts with you. When you offer love, patience, and calm moments at home, you help your child feel safe to learn. You can support reading in any language you speak.

The Science of Reading

Ep. 2: Sound Awareness & Phonics

You can help your child begin reading by playing with sounds. When you use rhymes, songs, and simple games, you help your child hear sounds clearly and read new words with confidence.

The Science of Reading

Ep. 3: Vocabulary

Everyday conversations with you matter. When you describe things, ask questions, and speak in your home language, you help your child learn new words and build strong vocabulary.

The Science of Reading

Ep. 4: Reading Fluency

You can support fluency by reading together. Pointing to the words, taking turns reading, and using different voices help your child read with rhythm and expression. A little practice every day makes a big difference.

The Science of Reading

Ep. 5: Advocacy & Support

You are your child’s best advocate. You can ask questions at school, check progress, and stay involved. You do not need to know everything—your presence and support already make a powerful impact.
